Japan-Singapore Defense Ministerial Meeting (Summary)

On 17th November, 2019, commencing at 5:10 pm (local time) for approx. 10 minutes, Defense Minister Kono, who was visiting Thailand to attend the 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), held a meeting with Minister for Defense Ng Eng Hen of Singapore. The summary of the meeting is as follows:
1. Opening
Minister Kono expressed his gratitude to Minister Ng for sending a Singapore Navy’s vessel to Japan in October 2019, and stated that the Japan-Singapore defense cooperation has steadily been making progress centering port calls by vessels and aircraft. In response, Minister Ng stated that Singapore would like to further promote the bilateral cooperation.
2. Bilateral Cooperation
- (1) Both ministers agreed to promote cooperation including high-level exchanges and port calls by vessels and aircraft based on “Vientiane Vision 2.0.”
- (2) Both ministers agreed to further enhance defense cooperation in broad fields.
3. Regional Issues
Both ministers exchanged views on the situation of North Korea and the South China Sea, and agreed to promote cooperation.
