Japan-India Defense Ministerial Meeting (Summary)

 On November 17th, 2019, commencing at 11:30 am (local time) for approx. 20 minutes, Defense Minister Kono, who was visiting Thailand to attend the 6th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), held a meeting with Minister for Defence Rajnath Singh of India. The summary of the meeting is as follows:

1. Opening

 At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Kono conveyed to Minister Singh that he was glad to meet Minister Singh face to face for the first time. Minister Kono also mentioned that the bilateral relationship based on the “Special Strategic and Global Partnership” contributed to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, and he was determined to continue to deepen such a relationship.

2. Japan-India Defense Cooperation and Exchanges

 The Ministers welcomed that bilateral exercises were conducted in all three services of Japan and India this year and shared the view to further promote the Japan-India defense cooperation and exchanges as confirmed by both Prime Ministers.Minister Kono also confirmed that the defense cooperation and exchanges between Japan and India had already been conducted in wide areas and at every level and mentioned that he hoped defense cooperation in various areas were going to be discussed and take concrete shapes hereafter.

3. Regional Issues

 The Ministers exchanged their views on the security environment surrounding the both countries.
