Conclusion of International Disaster Relief Activities in the Republic of Indonesia

Regarding the severe forest fires causing serious damage in the Republic of Indonesia, on 28 August 2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs consulted with the Minister of Defense about conducting international disaster relief activities. Following this consultation, the Minister of Defense ordered the Commander, Japan Self-Defense Forces Joint Operations Command, to conduct international disaster relief activities in the Republic of Indonesia.
Following this order, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force CH-47 transport helicopters have been conducting firefighting operations on Kalimantan Island since 16 September.
Subsequently, the Government of Indonesia informed Japan that the firefighting operations conducted by the Japan Self-Defense Forces had contributed to preventing the spread of the forest fires and that further response efforts could be handled by the Government of Indonesia. The Government of Indonesia also expressed its appreciation and gratitude for the support provided.
In light of this, today the Ministry of Defense issued an order for the termination of international disaster relief activities in the Republic of Indonesia. Upon completion of today's planned firefighting operations, the unit will conclude its activities in Indonesia and return to Japan as soon as preparations are completed.
