As part of the initiatives under the Vientiane Vision 2.0, the guideline for defense cooperation between Japan and ASEAN, from 2-10 July 2026 JMOD/JMSDF conducted the Ship Rider Cooperation Program with participants from ASEAN. On board of JS Kaga, participants observed exercises, delivered presentations on and discussed their respective counties’ perspectives on maritime security, and exchanged views on a variety of topics including international maritime law, and Women, Peace and Security (WPS).
The program also provided valuable opportunities for participants to strengthen exchanges with one another and with JMSDF personnel, promoting mutual understanding and building trust in the field of maritime security.
In addition to participants from ASEAN member states, one officer from the Sri Lankan Navy joined the program as an observer. The program contributed to enhancing cooperation toward maintaining and strengthening a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).
