Since 2014, Japan has implemented a capacity building project aimed at contributing to the development of personnel required for the deployment of Mongolian Army Engineer Units to UN peacekeeping operations (PKO).
The project has progressed through four phases: Phase 1 (2014-2016) provided the Mongolian Army Engineer Units with basic road construction training. Phase 2 (2017-2019) provided more advanced road construction training, including drainage systems (culverts), as well as instructor training. Phase 3 (2021-2024) aimed to enable the Mongolian Army Engineer Units to independently carry out all aspects of road construction.
In 2025, Phase 4 was launched with the objective of equipping the Mongolian Army Engineer Units with the capability to independently conduct all aspects of PKO camp infrastructure development.
During this year’s invitational program, lectures and practical training on construction techniques required for PKO camp infrastructure development were conducted at Camp Katsuta of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
Japan and Mongolia will continue to strengthen their cooperation through the Capacity Building Project.
