I visited the Air Self-Defense Force’s (ASDF) Matsushima Air Base today. The base is home to the Blue Impulse, the only unit in the ASDF that conducts aerobatic flights. It also has a training unit, which trains F-2 fighter aircraft pilots who will shape the future of the ASDF, and plays an extremely important role in the defense of Japan. I understand that the base also symbolizes reconstruction for the ASDF. Today, I boarded a Blue Impulse aircraft and observed the reconstruction progress in Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures from the air. I have made reconstruction my lifework ever since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at the nuclear power station. As we mark the 15th year since the Great East Japan Earthquake, I would like to once again express my condolences and sympathy to all those affected and renew my hopes for continued reconstruction. In today’s flight, we flew near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In responding to the nuclear accident, there were Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel who literally put their lives on the line amid the risk of strong radiation and steadily demonstrated the results of the harsh training they underwent, carrying out duties for the sake of the nation and the people, such as spraying water on the power station. When I visited Camp Omiya last year, I exchanged views with personnel and others who had injured themselves due to a hydrogen explosion before the start of water-supply operations. Today, I was reminded that we must never forget their dedication and courage. During the flight, I was deeply impressed by the advanced flying skills of the pilots, the professionalism of the maintenance personnel in inspecting the aircraft, and the exceptional performance of the T-4 training aircraft. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone. We must not forget that Matsushima Air Base also suffered severe damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake. Even while the personnel themselves or their families were affected by the disaster and were in difficult circumstances, the personnel devoted themselves fearlessly to the duties assigned to them, such as rescuing affected people, carrying out recovery operations, and transporting relief supplies. Fifteen years after the Great East Japan Earthquake, I would like to reiterate my respect for the dedication of each and every SDF personnel who fulfilled their mission despite being in difficult circumstances. We must also ensure that we draw on the experience and lessons learned for future disaster risk reduction and mitigation efforts and Japan’s security. I exchanged views with members of cooperating organizations a short while ago, and have come away again sensing the positive relationship between the air base and cooperating organizations. After this, I will have an opportunity to interact with the families of the personnel. As Minister of Defense, I intend to express appreciation to everyone for their continued support and would like to hear their candid opinions.
