In response to the Israeli and U.S. attacks against Iran today, the National Security Council just convened a meeting, which I attended. Immediately following the outbreak of the attacks, the Prime Minister directed relevant Cabinet members to thoroughly gather information and to take all possible measures to ensure the safety of Japanese nationals who remain in the region. Upon receiving these instructions, I immediately issued four instructions: make utmost efforts to gather information, coordinate closely with relevant ministries and agencies, ensure the safety of Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel in the Middle East, and take all possible measures to carry out Japan’s surveillance. Prior to the National Security Council meeting, I held a meeting with relevant senior officials at the Ministry of Defense (MOD) and confirmed the current situation and the MOD’s response. The MOD has established a task force headed by myself to ensure that all possible measures are taken based on the developments in the situation. At this time, the foremost mission for which the MOD/SDF must be prepared for is transporting Japanese nationals upon request, and we are always maintaining readiness. We will continue to stand ready to respond to any developments in the situation.
