On 16 December 2025, Administrative Vice Minister Yamato held a meeting with Secretary of the Department of Defence of Australia, Greg Moriarty. The summary of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Administrative Vice Minister Yamato and Secretary Moriarty discussed Japan-Australia defense cooperation including cooperation in various areas such as bilateral and multilateral activities and defense equipment and technology cooperation, based on the establishment of the Framework for Strategic Defence Coordination (FSDC) announced at the Japan-Australia Defense Ministers’ Meeting held on the 7th this month, as well as exchanging views on regional situations.
  2. Administrative Vice Minister Yamato and Secretary Moriarty reaffirmed that Japan and Australia, as a central pillar of coordination among like-minded countries, will continue to work closely with the United States and other partners.
  3. Administrative Vice Minister Yamato and Secretary Moriarty concurred on further close cooperation, looking towards next year’s 50th anniversary of the signing of the Australia and Japan Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, based on the Japan-Australia Defense Ministers’ Joint Statement announced on the 7th this month.
