On November 1, 2025, Defense Minister Koizumi, visiting Malaysia to attend the 12th ASEAN Defense Minister’s Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), held a meeting with Singapore’s Minister for Defence, Chan Chun Sing. The summary of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset of the meeting, Minister Koizumi expressed his delight at being able to have a meeting with Minister Chan shortly after assuming his position as Defense Minister, and emphasized that Japan would like to enhance cooperation in the defense field with Singapore, as we approach a milestone year of the 60th anniversary of Japan-Singapore diplomatic relationship next year. In response, Minister Chan stated that he also welcomes his first meeting with Minister Koizumi.
  2. The two Ministers welcomed the close communication between Japan and Singapore, such as human exchanges including the students at Japan’s National Defense Academy who serve as a bridge for bilateral defense exchanges after graduation, and high-level exchanges. They also welcomed the close collaboration among the operational authorities on the occasions of missions/operation and exercises. The two Ministers concurred to further enhance defense cooperation between the two countries in various area.
  3. The two Ministers discussed the importance of multilateral cooperation, and particularly affirmed their commitment to advancing the cooperation between Japan and the ASEAN CBR Defense Expert Network.

  4. The two Ministers, given that Singapore serves as the Coordinator Country to ASEAN for Japan until 2027, concurred to further strengthen defense cooperation between Japan and ASEAN.
