On August 19, at 11:05 local time, Defense Minister Nakatani held a meeting with Türkiye’s Minister of National Defence, H.E. Mr. Yaşar GÜLER, for approximately 100 minutes. The summary of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset of the meeting, Minister Nakatani expressed his delight of being able to visit Türkiye, a country that Japan has enjoyed an amicable relationship for a long time, for the first time as Japan’s Minister of Defense, and also to be able to hold a Japan-Türkiye Defense Ministerial Meeting. Minister Güler responded that it is his honor to welcome Japan’s Minister of Defense to Türkiye for the first time.
- The two Ministers welcomed the advancements of cooperation between the defense authorities, such as high-level exchanges, unit-level exchanges and exchanges in the education field, based on the Statement of Intent on Defense Cooperation and Exchanges signed in 2012. Upon that, the two Ministers affirmed to further expand defense cooperation between the two countries, with the Defense Ministerial Meeting this time as one trigger, and confirmed to hold a dialogue among the defense working level to discuss concrete cooperative fields.
- The two Ministers exchanged views on possible defense equipment and technology cooperation between Japan and Türkiye as one area of potential cooperation, and the two Ministers concurred to start a discussion between the equipment authorities toward realizing exchanges between the defense industries of Japan and Türkiye.
- The two Ministers exchange opinions on security environment surrounding both countries. The two Ministers shared their views on the importance of the roles played by both Japan and Türkiye in tackling various challenges in the international community, and concurred to collaborate together for the peace and stability of the region.
