Japan-Australia Defense Ministerial Meeting (Summary)

On June 1, 2025, Defense Minister Nakatani, visiting Singapore to attend the 22nd IISS Asian Security Summit (Shangri-La Dialogue), held a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP. The summary of the meeting is as follows:

  1. Minister Nakatani congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Marles on his reassumption of office. The Ministers shared their views that Japan Australia relationship is strategically aligned than ever before, and continue to enhance bilateral defense cooperation in every area including operational cooperation and joint trainings, and defense equipment and technology.
  2. The Ministers concurred on further strengthening Japan-Australia-U.S. cooperation through joint trainings such as Bushido Guardian, Orient Shield, and Talisman Sabre which will take place in either Japan or Australia. The Ministers welcomed the progress in discussions on the scope, objectives and forms of enhanced operational cooperation, based on the Australia-Japan Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation (JDSC). In addition, the Ministers shared their intention to further promote bilateral defense equipment and technology cooperation.
  3. The Ministers agreed to further promote cooperation with the U.S., a shared ally of Japan and Australia, and with regional like-minded countries to realize a free and open
    Indo-Pacific.
