Today, at Fuji School, I was informed about the current situation from those in charge of its education programs and from those in charge of the Test and Evaluation Command (TECOM). I also observed some training. Inside Fuji School, I first observed the Ranger Course, a specialized course for officers. I myself underwent the Ranger Course at Fuji School some 40 years ago. Since then, the training has evolved considerably, and ingenuity is exercised. Today, training was given in mountain infiltration involving climbing up and down cliffs. The attached carabiners and other gear were completely different from my time. They were making extensive use of technology and items. While the duties assigned to personnel are as rigorous as before, the method of instruction and the strategies employed were more thoughtfully developed. As the ways of warfighting are changing around the world in modern warfare, ranger education is being reviewed to ensure that it adapts to the changes. To enhance the skill level of the Ground Self-Defense Force, I expect that Fuji School will review the current program and execute a new ranger course. In addition, I received an explanation from TECOM about the latest equipment, including the hyper velocity gliding projectile for the defense of remote islands. I also rode a Type-16 mobile combat vehicle and Type-90 main battle tank and observed personnel’s operating skills. The new technology is extremely helpful in detecting targets. Even when the vehicles jolt while moving, the technology absorbs the shocks and keeps guns from moving. The vehicles employ outstanding technology. I hope to continue making field and unit visits whenever there is an opportunity and hear directly from personnel. Today, I had an opportunity to speak earlier with officers for about an hour. This visit has reinforced my determination to make continued efforts to ensure that Fuji School can successfully train capable officers for this new era. In this sense, it was highly informative to visit Fuji School that trains junior and middle officers for national defense.
