The Japan-Lithuania Defense Ministers Meeting
On May 28, 2025, commencing at 18:30 for approximately 60 minutes, Minister NAKATANI held a Defense Ministerial Meeting with Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, H.E. Ms. Dovilė Šakalienė.
- At the outset, Minister Nakatani welcomed Minister Šakalienė’s visit to Japan. Minister Šakalienė conveyed her appreciation to Minister Nakatani for hosting the visit.
- Minister Nakatani stated security of Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable and underscored the importance of strengthening the involvement to each region respectively. Minister Nakatani explained Japan's efforts for Euro-Atlantic security, including support for Ukraine, which is facing a Russia’s aggression, and welcomed Lithuania's high interest and its involvement in Indo-Pacific region. In this regard, Minister Nakatani welcomed Lithuania’s strong interest in contributing multilateral cooperation to ensure the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution on North Korea.
- The meeting also included a discussion on bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges. The two ministers highly valued the development of bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges in various areas including high-level exchanges, cyber cooperation, working level exchanges in information, educational exchanges, support for Ukraine, and concurred to continue to promote cooperation.
- In addition, Minister Nakatani conveyed that JMOD had decided to dispatch a staff to Regional Cyber Defense Center (RCDC) located in Lithuania for a short term from the end of June this year. He also conveyed that JMOD is finalizing the concrete content of assistance in order to share its knowledge on humanitarian demining as an educational support with the aim of enhancing Ukrainian Armed Forces’ capability with regard to the cooperation through Demining Coalition, which is led by Lithuania and in which JMOD/JSDF has announced its participation in 2023, to support Ukraine. In order to further strengthen future cooperation, both ministers decided to increase the frequency of the Military to Military (MM) Dialogue and to hold the next Dialogue by the end of this year. Furthermore, the two Ministers discussed the future of security of information between the two countries.
- The two ministers concurred to continue to work closely together towards further deepening Japan-Lithuania cooperation.
