On January 7, 2025, Defense Minister Nakatani held a meeting with Minister of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia, H.E. Lieutenant General (ret.) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, in Indonesia, for approximately 90 minutes. The summary of the meeting is as follows:
- At the outset of the meeting, the two Ministers welcomed the rapid development of Japan-Indonesia bilateral relationship in recent years, including its upgrading to “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” in 2023, and welcomed that defense cooperation is also seeing steady enhancement among others.
- The two Ministers confirmed to further enhance cooperation and communication between the defense authorities at high levels including ministerial ones through efforts on both sides.
- The two Ministers confirmed to continue strengthening collaboration between the units through multilateral exercises such as “Super Garuda Shield” and “Komodo,” and cooperative initiatives in such areas as HA/DR.
- The two Ministers recognized the achievements to date in the education-exchange field such as acceptance of Indonesian cadets and officers at National Defense Academy and others, and also affirmed to further advance human resource exchanges for the next generation. In this context, the two Ministers also welcomed the newly initiated officer exchange program hosted by Sasakawa Peace Foundation.
- The two Ministers concurred to establish a defense consultation on both countries’ maritime security including defense equipment and technology cooperation.
- The two Ministers welcomed the successful outcome of the “Maritime Cooperation and Connectivity Conference (MCCC)”—a model case to materialize the AOIP (ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific)—that Japan and Indonesia cohosted in December last year, and discussed the importance of further advancing cooperation within the ASEAN framework.
- Minister Nakatani expressed grave concerns over the recent military activities surrounding Japan, and the two Ministers exchanged views on regional situations including the East and South China Seas.
