On November 1, commencing at 10:50 for approximately 30 minutes, Minister Nakatani held a meeting with H.E. Mr. Josep Borrell Fontelles, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission.
- At the outset, Minister Nakatani welcomed HRVP Borrell’s visit to Japan. HRVP Borrell conveyed his appreciation to Minister Nakatani for hosting the meeting.
- Minister Nakatani stated that North Korea’s launching ICBM-class ballistic missiles yesterday and growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia are significant challenges to the international community. HRVP Borrell also shared the same views to this statement and strongly condemned North Korea’s launch of the ballistic missile.
- Both of them exchanged views on the defense exchanges and cooperation between Japan and EU. Minister Nakatani welcomed the progress in various defense cooperations such as Japan’s joining the Schuman Security and Defence Forum and joint exercise on counterpiracy between Japan and EU.
- They also renewed their determination to further strengthen security cooperation between Japan and EU in various fields such as maritime security, cyber, space, hybrid threats based on the Japan-EU Security and Defence Partnership, which will be announced by Japan-EU Foreign Ministers today. The Ministers concurred to work more closely together towards further deepening defense cooperation and exchanges between Japan and EU.
