During 12 - 19 November, the MOD/SDF invited eight personnel from the Ministry of Defense Indonesia/Indonesian Armed Forces/Indonesian Army as a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) cooperation project.
The Indonesian delegation observed various activities during the Michinoku Alert exercise conducted by the GSDF Northeastern Army in Sendai. This included deployment of the Staging Care Unit, Landing Craft Air Cushion, and hoist rescue. Participants also deepened understanding of HA/DR collaboration between the SDF and local government at a prefectural and city level.
At Matsushima Airbase, the delegation received a brief on lessons learned from the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and learned about current tsunami countermeasures through lectures and facility tours.
As part of this program, the Director for International Cooperation on Women, Peace and Security also highlighted the importance of women’s participation and gender perspectives in HA/DR operations.
The Ministry of Defense will continue to strengthen Japan-Indonesia defense cooperation.
