On October 11, Defense Minister Nakatani and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon Richard Marles MP, held a teleconference. The summary is as follows.
At the outset, Minister Marles congratulated Minister Nakatani for his appointment and Minister Nakatani expressed his appreciation.
The ministers affirmed that Japan and Australia, who completely share the fundamental values and strategic objectives, have expanded defense cooperation in every area including operational cooperation and joint trainings and defense equipment and technology cooperation. They also shared their views on continuing to promote each initiative such as enhancing the interoperability between Japan Self-Defense Forces and Australian Defence Force, based on the Japan-Australia 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations held last month.
They concurred that they would further promote cooperation, also with the US which is the ally to both countries, to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
