Defense Minister Kihara’s visit to Republic of India (Overview)

Defense Minister Kihara Visited India from August 19 to August 20, 2024. Events are as follows.

  1. Japan-India Defense Ministerial Meeting
    Defense Minister Kihara held a meeting with Defense Minister Signh for the first time in approximately two years. The ministers appreciated that bilateral exercises in all components have been conducted, and concurred to make the bilateral exercises more complex and sophisticated, and continue conducting them. The ministers also appreciated the progress of the discussion among the defense authorities and corporations, targeting the transfer of Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN). Furthermore, the ministers concurred that cooperation among every country is necessary for stable Indo-Pacific region, and affirmed the importance of defense cooperation and exchanges not only between Japan-India but also through multilateral frameworks.

  2. Japan-India Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting (“2+2”)
    Defense Minister Kihara and Foreign Minister Kamikawa held the third Japan-India Foreign and Defence Ministerial Meeting (2+2) with Defence Minister Singh and External Minister Jaishankar. The Ministers affirmed to deepen the cooperative relationship between both sides to realize Free and open Indo-Pacific in the international security environment, which its severity has intensified.

  3. Courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi Prime Minister of India
    On Monday August 19, Defense Minister Kihara paid a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India with Foreign Minister Kamikawa at Prime Minister’s Office. Defense Minister Kihara highlighted the stable progress in Japan-India security cooperation in broad areas and at every level, and expressed his will to continue to strengthen defense cooperation and exchanges between both sides.

  4. Flower Offering at National War Memorial
    On Tuesday August 20, Defense Minister Kihara offered flowers at National War Memorial in New Delhi. The memorial was built to honor and mourn soldiers of Indian Armed Forces who fought in armed conflicts for independent India.
