Delegation | 2 officials from Indo-Pacific Regional Policy Division, JMOD and 9 JGSDF personnel |
In 2014, the JMOD/JGSDF began this project as a way to contribute to the training of Mongolian Army personnel in the field of road construction, a skill that is required to enable the deployment of engineering units to UN peacekeeping operations. Since 2021, the JMOD/JGSDF has conducted Phase 3 activities, following Phase 1 (2014-2016) which provided basic road construction training, and Phase 2 (2017-2019) which offered more advanced road construction training, including techniques to build road drainage features. In phase 3, the JMOD/JGSDF is delivering not only guidance and advice to Mongolian instructors to train students in road construction, but also technical assistance in road surveying, in order to further support the Mongolian Army’s independent management of all aspects of road construction in the future. Additionally, as part of Japan-US cooperation, the JMOD/JGSDF made use of US-provided heavy engineering equipment in the training. This equipment was provided to the Mongolian Army for their use during future PKO deployments. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Japan and Mongolia. By advancing our defense relationship with the Mongolian Army and by providing an avenue to share of our experience and knowledge, this project has contributed to facilitating cooperation between the two countries. |
