Japan-Lithuania Defense Vice Minister’s Meeting

On June 12, 2022, Vice-Minister of Defense for International Affairs Tsuchimichi, who was visiting Singapore to attend the 19th IISS Asia Pacific Security Conference (Shangri-La Dialogue), held a meeting with Vice-Minister of National Defence of the Republic of Lithuania, Margiris Abukevičius. The summary of the meeting is as follows.

  1. Vice-Minister Tsuchimichi and Vice-Minister Abukevičius exchanged their views on the situation in Ukraine, and affirmed that the Russian invasion of Ukraine shakes the foundation of international order not only for Europe but Asia as well, and that it is important for the international community to respond firmly against this invasion.
  2. They also exchanged their views regarding regional environment of the Indo-Pacific including China and North Korea.
  3. Vice-Minister Tsuchimichi stated that as the security environment surrounding both Japan and Lithuania has reached a major turning point, it is extremely important for countries sharing common values to cooperate together. He further stated his intention to continue the communication between the defense authorities in order to continue to promote defense cooperation and exchanges between Japan and Lithuania, as well as to work towards cooperation through NATO and the EU.
  4. Japan will further develop defense cooperation with the Republic of Lithuania which is a partner sharing common values, and together will contribute to uphold and reinforce a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”.
