Japan-Singapore Defense Ministers’ Meeting

On June 11, 2022, Defense Minister KISHI, who is visiting Singapore to attend the IISS Asia Security Conference (Shangri-La Dialogue), held a meeting with Minister for Defence of the Republic of Singapore, Dr Ng Eng Hen. The summary of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset of the meeting, touching upon that the Ministers signed the revised “Memorandum on Defence Exchanges between Ministry of Defense, Japan and Ministry of Defence, Republic of Singapore” on the same day in the morning, Minister Kishi stated that he would like to further promote defense cooperation and exchanges with Singapore, and Minister Ng also expressed his hope for further progress in defense cooperation and exchanges between both countries.
  2. The Ministers exchanged views on the regional security issues, and reaffirmed to further enhancing coordination bilaterally while the foundation of the international order has been shaken by some serious issues such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On top of that, concerning the situations in the East China Sea and South China Sea, Minister Kishi reiterated his strong opposition to any unilateral change of the status quo by force or any activities that escalate tensions.

  3. The Ministers exchanged views on bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges as well. They welcomed the launch of official negotiation regarding the Agreement concerning the Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology, and concurred to further accelerate discussions to specify cases on transferring defense equipment.

  4. Furthermore, the Ministers also concurred in strengthening defense cooperation and exchanges between both countries while maintaining close communication between respective defense establishments.
