Meeting between Japan’s Minister of Defense and Brunei Darussalam’s Minister at Prime Minister’s Office

On June 21, 2022, Defense Minister KISHI, who is visiting Cambodia to attend the ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting, held a meeting with The Honorable Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Minister at Prime Minister’s Office of Brunei Darussalam. The summary of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the outset of the meeting, Minister Kishi extended his congratulations on The Honorable Pehin Halbi’s appointment as Minister at Prime Minister’s Office and said that he was pleased to meet with The Honorable Pehin Halbi for the first time, and The Honorable Pehin Halbi also expressed pleasure on the first face-to-face meeting.
  2. Minister Kishi expressed his views on the regional security issues, and shared his concerns on the foundation of the international order that has been shaken by some serious issues such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On top of that, concerning the situations in the East China Sea and South China Sea, Minister Kishi reiterated his strong opposition to any unilateral change of the status quo by force or any activities that escalate tensions.
  3. Minister Halbi expressed appreciation for Japan’s strong support during its ASEAN Chairmanship in 2021, and shared its hope that the cooperation in defense under the Vientieane Vision 2.0 continues to flourish.
  4. The Ministers exchanged views on bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges as well, and concurred to further strengthen the relationship between respective defense authorities through programs such as exchanges of visits at high-level, port calls by vessels and aircrafts, and bilateral exercises.
