Protection of the Asset of the Australian Defence Force Unit under Article 95-2 of the JSDF Law

1.The MSDF Destroyer JS Inazuma protected the RAN Frigate HMAS Warramunga under Article 95-2 of the JSDF Law on the occasion of the Japan- Australia bilateral exercise (Nichi-Gou Trident) * in the waters south of Shikoku after receiving request from the ADF.
* Exercise period: November 10-12

2.It was the first asset protection for the ADF since ministers confirmed in June’s 2+2 meeting that the JSDF is ready to provide protection. It was also the first case that the JSDF protected foreign armed forces besides the U.S. Forces.

3.Protection of the ADF represents how interoperability between the units has enhanced and much closer collaboration has become possible between Japan and Australia, which is a “Special Strategic Partner.” Furthermore, it is a remarkable progress for Japan–Australia bilateral defense cooperation, which is important for securing peace and stability of Japan and the region.

4.The MOD/JSDF will continue to elevate the bilateral defense cooperation with Australia to a new level through such initiatives to maintain and strengthen “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”
