Japan-U.S. Defense Ministerial Meeting

On March 16, Defense Minister Kishi held a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Austin at MOD. They confirmed that Japan-U.S. Alliance is more important than ever for the regional peace and stability in the security environment rapidly growing severe.

The Ministers affirmed that Japan and the U.S. will work to maintain and reinforce a free and open Indo-Pacific with the Japan-U.S. Alliance being the cornerstone.

Minister Kishi expressed the strong resolve to the defense of Japan and stated that Japan will play an active role in regional peace and stability. Secretary Austin welcomed the statement and confirmed the unwavering commitment of the United States to the defense of Japan.


They concurred to work together to further strengthen the Alliance capabilities to deter and respond.


Defense Minister Kishi stated that it is unacceptable for the Chinese Coast Guard Law, which includes provisions that are inconsistent with the international law, to increase tensions in the East and South China Seas, and both ministers expressed their serious concerns.
They also shared the recognition regarding the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.


The two ministers also agreed that in order to enhance the deterrence and response capabilities of the alliance, it is important for both the SDF and U.S. forces in Japan to strengthen their readiness through various advanced exercises, including Japan-U.S. bilateral
training.
