Japan-United Arab Emirates Defense Minister’s Video Teleconference

On March 10, Minister Kishi had a teleconference with H.E. Bowardi, Minister of Defense of UAE. Mr. Kishi explained the extension of the JSDF information gathering activities and both agreed to keep close communication for ensuring peace, stability and safe navigation of vessels.
Peace and stability in the Middle East is critical for the peace and prosperity of the
world including Japan. It is important to ensure the safety of navigation of Japan-related vessels in ME which is a major supplier of energy and from which Japan imports nearly 90% of oil.

Japan-United Arab Emirates Defense Minister’s Video Teleconference

On March 10, 2021, Minister KISHI Nobuo held a video teleconference with Minister Bowardi of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).


1 The two Ministers exchanged views on bilateral defense cooperation as well as current regional security issues and confirmed that free and open maritime order based on the rule of law is important. Minister Kishi expressed serious concern over the China’s Coast Guard Law.

2 Minister Kishi explained the extension of the term of the information gathering activities by the SDF for ensuring the safe navigation of the Japan-related vessels in the Middle East, and both concurred on continuing close communication for peace and stability in the Middle East as well as ensuring safe navigation of the vessels.

3 Both concurred in promoting bilateral defense cooperation in the context of preventing the spread of infectious diseases, including sharing expertise and lessons learned during disaster relief operations,in light of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

4 Both decided to maintain and promote defense cooperation and exchanges in order to uphold and reinforce the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while continuing close communication between the defense authorities.
