The Peace Operations Workshop

On Thursday 12th September,2024, Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) held the special session of the Peace Workshop. The purpose of the Peace Workshop is to develop skills and to acquire knowledge necessary for the education and research on international peace operations. JPC invited Ms. MIYAKE Yuriko as a speaker. Ms. MIYAKE, who is based in New York and has worldwide reputations as a storyteller, an actress, a dancer, etc., conducted a workshop to improve communication competence. Thanks to her guidance including a lecture based on her experience in a global context and a coaching session on presentations performance, participants were enlightened and able to develop their expressiveness useful for training and international meetings.

Visit by Royal Armed Forces General Headquarters Kingdom of Morocco

On July 12, 2024, JPC received COL Ilias LAMDOUAR, and COL Rachid El ABDI, Royal Armed Forces General Headquarters Kingdom of Morocco. COL WATANABE, JPC Director and COL AKUTSU, Chief Training and Research Officer, welcomed their visit.
 In the meeting, both participants explained their efforts toward training on worldwide peace operations each other and exchanged views and possible cooperation on training on peace operations.

Workshop held with UN Department of Peace Operations staff

From Monday, June 17 to Friday, June 21, 2024, the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) held a workshop with UN Department of Peace Operations staff.
 At the workshop, participants from both parties exchanged opinions on the current status and challenges of the latest UN peace operations, for the purpose of development of materials for the training on UN peace operations.

Participation in AAPTC 2024 Annual Conference

From May 27 to 30, 2024, Colonel WATANABE Kuniyoshi, Director of Japan Peacekeeping and Training and Research Center (JPC) and Colonel NANJO Mamoru, senior research officer of JPC, participated in the annual meeting of Association of Asia-Pacific Peace Operations Training Centers (AAPTC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
 AAPTC, composed of 24 members of peace operations training centers in Asia-Pacific region, holds its annual meeting to discuss training and cooperation on peace operations. At this meeting, with 26 members and representatives of international organizations including UN, JPC participants presented its effort regarding training on peace cooperation, then, through discussion and dialogues, developed relationship with worldwide partners.

Participation in UNSOC at ADFPOTC

From May 13 to May 29, 2024, Major ISHIZUKA Noriyoshi, Research Officer at Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), participated as an instructor in the United Nations Staff Officers Course (UNSOC) at Australia Defence Force Peace Operations Training Centre (ADFPOTC) in Canberra, Australia. The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge and skills for candidates of staff officers for military component headquarters in United Nations missions. Major ISHIZUKA was invited as one of the instructors at the two-week training program.
 Major ISHIZUKA, with his experiences and knowledge of peace operations and JPC, delivered lectures on stress management, Force Headquarters structure and function to trainees from Australian and other countries and exchanged various perspectives through discussions and group exercise with other instructors and participants.

The Peace Operations Workshop

On Friday, June 7, 2024, the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) hosted the Peace Operation Workshop. The purpose of the workshop is to acquire knowledge necessary for the education and research on international peace operations. JPC invited Prof. INOUE-HANZAWA Mika at Toyo Gakuen University as a speaker. Prof. INOUE-HANZAWA delivered a lecture on A New Agenda for Peace and Peace Operations in Africa. Followed by the lecture, participants lively discussed outlook of the future peace operations.

Lectures on national security issues to university students

On June 6, 2024,requested from TOKYO Prefectural Cooperation Office(PCO), Colonel WATANABE Kuniyoshi, Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) and two senior officers delivered lectures to university students participating in the Japan-America Student Conference scheduled for August this year.
 Director and senior officers of JPC provided their discourses on national security and lessons learned in the worldwide context. Participants lively posed questions and discussed on global peace and security at breakout discussion sessions. JPC offered an opportunity to share understanding on peace cooperation activities of MOD/Self-Defense Force through discussion on Japanese contribution to peace operations and real aspects of oversea assignments.

Visit by the Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Training Centre

On May 20, 2024, JPC received CAPTAIN Guy Blackburn, Royal Australian Navy, Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Training Centre and Lieutenant Colonel Michael Webbe, Royal Australian Army, Commanding Officer of Peace Operations Training Centre. Colonel WATANABE, Director of JPC, welcomed Commandant of the Australian Defence Force Training Centre and Colonel AKUTSU, Chief of Training and Research Office, JPC, briefed the outline of JPC. They shared their views on training on peace operations and their prospects for promotion of partnership in terms of training.

The 4th Peace Operation Workshop of 2023

On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center(JPC) held the 4th Peace Operation Workshop.
 This workshop is aimed at acquiring knowledge necessary for the education and research on international peace operations. We invited Dr. YAMASHITA Hikaru, Professor at University of Shizuoka as a speaker. The workshop was held in a hybrid format, both on-site and online.
 At the workshop, Dr.YAMASHITA made a speech entitled“Change and Future Perspective of the UN Peacekeeping Operations,”and then questions and answers sessions were held.
 The JPC will continue to improve the quality of its training and research through workshops.

Lessons Learned

The Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) invited Retired Lieutenant General Isobe, former Commanding General of the Eastern Army of the JGSDF, as instructor to give the lessons learned about PKO.
 LTG Isobe talked about his experiences working toward the first deployment of JSDF for Cambodia PKO mission, and gave us valuable opinions regarding the future vision of JSDF activities.
 The JPC will continue to improve the quality of its training and research through dissemination of the results.
