JPC Activities & Events 2012

From December 15 to 19, 2012, Lt. Col. Takeshi Nakano, senior research officer of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) was dispatched to the “Introductory Course on Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Operations course” held at Cairo Regional Center for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA) as a lecturer. It was the fourth dispatchment of the JPC, and the first time for an Air Self-Defense Force officer.
　This course is targeted at civilians in African countries who engage in peacekeeping operations and humanitarian assistance. This time, Lt. Col. Nakano gave a lecture about experience and lessons learned from the SDF’s peace support operations (East Timor and Iraq), and lively Q&As followed.

From July 16 to 19, 2012, Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), Col. Katsunobu Ishibashi participated in the annual meeting of the Association of Asia-Pacific Peace Operations Training Centers (AAPTC) held in Malaysia.
　The AAPTC is made up of Asia-Pacific countries’ education/training organizations and research institutions associated with peacekeeping and peacebuilding, aiming to enhance mutual cooperation and complement each other’s capabilities in relation to development of peacekeeping trainers within the region.
　After observing the meeting in 2021, Japan (JPC) expressed hope to officially join the association in the 2012 meeting, which was unanimously approved.

On April 25, 2012, Heran Song, head of Central Highlands Office (Bamyan), UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) visited the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), and exchanged opinion on international peace cooperation activities. Ms. Song assumed the present post in September 2006. Before that she served in UNOSOM (Somalia), UNPROFOR (former Yugoslavia), UNCRO (Croatia), UNTAES (Eastern Slavonia), UNMIBH (Bosnia and Herzegovina), UNTAET (East Timor) and UNAMA as Deputy Head of Eastern Regional Office.

On January 19, 2012, the “3rd International Peace and Security Symposium” hosted by the Cabinet Office’s Secretariat of the International Peace Cooperation Headquarters was held, in which Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center, Colonel Katsunobu Ishibashi gave a presentation titled “More active contribution to UN Peacekeeping Operations: Viewpoint and direction in capacity development of staff officers in the military sector.” You can view the presentation from the below link.
