Participation in the POC course Held in Austria

From 12 to 16 November 2018, MAJ Takuya Arai, a research officer of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), participated in the course on the protection of civilians (POC), which took place at ASPR* in Austria.
 MAJ Arai was able to gain knowledge about the operational level POC role of the military, police and civilian personnel in armed conflict and post-conflict situations.
 The JPC will utilize this knowledge for the future training and research activities as well as for further improving the capabilities of our people.

Director of JPC Participated in the IAPTC

From 1 to 4 October 2018, COL Rikiya Kondo, Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), participated in the IAPTC* annual conference held in Auckland, New Zealand, accompanied by a JPC research officer.
 COL Kondo surveyed the moves of recent trends in UN peacekeeping activities to have them reflected on the training and research approaches, and also sought to promote information sharing and close cooperation among relevant overseas organizations.
 From Japan, COL Kazuyuki Sato, Commander of the International Peace Cooperation Activities Training Unit (IPCAT), JGSDF, civilians from the Cabinet Office and the MOFA, and Dr. Hideaki Shinoda, Professor of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Director, Hiroshima Peacebuilders Center), also participated in the conference.

Workshop on the current situation in Africa and PKO Capacity-Building assistance of African States

On 28 September 2018, Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) (Director: COL Rikiya Kondo) held a workshop on the current situation in Africa and PKO Capacity-Building assistance of African States, inviting Dr. Sadaharu Kataoka, Professor of School of International Liberal Studies in Waseda University, as a special lecturer. 
 While taking into account the situations in major African countries and keeping in mind that around 70 percent of the agenda of the UN Security Council is African issues and 80 percent of UN military peacekeepers are deployed in Africa, we had a meaningful discussion on how we could contribute to PKO Capacity-Building of African states.
 The gains from this workshop will be reflected on future training and research activities of the JPC.

Director of IPSTC Visited the JPC

On 26 June 2018, BG Patrick Muta Nderitu, Director of the International Peace Training Centre (IPSTC), Kenya, visited the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) accompanied by six personnel.
 They mutually briefed each other on their activities and exchanged views on the training for international peacekeeping activities.
 BG Muta Nderitu expressed hope for further deepening bilateral relationship between the two countries.

Ethiopian Army Deputy Chief of Staff Visited the JPC

On 25 May 2018, GEN Birhanu Jula, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian Army, visited the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) accompanied by two personnel.
 GEN Jula exchanged views with VADM Katsuo Deguchi, Commandant of the Joint Staff College on the training for international peacekeeping activities.
 GEN Jula expressed hope for further deepening bilateral relations.

Director of JPC Participated in the AAPTC and Director of U.S. Army PKSOI Visited the JPC

From 21 to 24 May 2018, COL Rikiya Kondo, Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC), participated in the AAPTC※1 annual meeting held in Seoul, Korea, accompanied by a JPC research officer.
 COL Kondo exchanged information and opinions with representatives from member countries, who work for international peacekeeping activities.
 In addition, COL Michael W. Rauhut, Director of the U.S. Army Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI)※2, and three others visited the JPC following the AAPTC meeting and exchanged opinions with JPC research officers on 24 May.
 The JPC commits to steadily enhancing confidence and cooperation between partners in Asia-Pacific region by making the most of those opportunities.

Commandant of KAIPTC Visited the JPC

On 17 May 2018, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Griffiths S. Evans, Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Ghana, visited the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) accompanied by five personnel.
 AVM Evans briefed about the activity of the KAIPTC, and exchanged views with COL Rikiya Kondo, Director of the JPC on the training for international peacekeeping activities.
 AVM Evans expressed hope for further deepening bilateral relations between the KAIPTC and the Japanese government.

Director of the JPC Observed “EXERCISE SHANTI DOOT-4” in Bangladesh

From 25 February to 1 March 2018, COL Michio Suda, the Director of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) and MAJ Takahisa Moriya, a Senior Planning Officer observed the multinational exercise on UN PKO, participated in the seminar hosted by Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT) and exchanged information and opinions with participants from all over the world about the latest issues regarding UN PKO.
 The gains from this seminar will be incorporated in the future training and research activities of the JPC.

Participation in the Regional Meeting in Australia

 Major Takaaki Tanaka, a research officer of the Japan Peacekeeping Training and Research Center (JPC) participated in the Regional PKO Capability and Capacity Building Technical Work Group Meeting held in Canberra, Australia from 21 to 26 January, and had a discussion with other participants about mutual exchanges.
