Telephone Call from Defense Secretary Austin to Defense Minister Kishi (Summary)

 On July 9, Defense Minister Kishi received a call from Defense Secretary Austin held a call. The summary is as follows.

 Secretary Austin offered his condolences to the passing of former Prime Minister Abe, and stated that he and the entire Department of Defense stand with Minister Kishi and the people of Japan as allies and friends. Secretary Austin also praised the former Prime Minister’s achievements in deepening Japan-U.S. Alliance including through expanding Japan’s role in the Alliance as well as strengthening alliances and partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

 Minister Kishi expressed his gratitude for Secretary Austin’s remarks, and stated that the despicable act that took place is a desecration of democracy and is absolutely impermissible. In addition, Minister Kishi expressed his determination to continue to strengthen the Japan-U.S. Alliance in partnership with Secretary Austin, carrying on the legacy of former Prime Minister Abe.
