Japan Airspace and Air Defense Identification Zone

The term "territorial airspace" refers to the skies above the territory and territorial waters (12 nautical miles [approx. 22 km] from the coastline). Flying freely inside the territorial airspace is not permitted under international law. Surrounded by oceans, it can be predicted that an invasion to our country will come from the skies in a short period of time in most cases. Protecting territorial airspace by maintaining constant readiness 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, directly connects to protecting the lives and properties of the people.
