JS OSUMI related to international disaster relief activities in the Kingdom of Tonga arrived in Japan

On March 5, JS OSUMI related to international disaster relief activities in the Kingdom of Tonga completed missions and arrived in Kure.
JS OSUMI left Japan on January 24 to deliver emergency relief supplies to the Kingdom of Tonga, which was damaged by a massive eruption of an undersea volcano.
On February 9, we began activity in Kingdom of Tonga for eight days activities and received a ministerial order to terminate the international emergency relief activities and returned to Japan.
Upon returning to Japan, VADM YUASA Hideki, Commander of the Self-Defense Fleet,said, “Landing Ship Division 1 JS OSUMI and the Air Assistance Force worked in close cooperation to transport a total of 38 tons of supplies and provided a total of 81 tons of water, including those for remote islands. It is worthy of praise that the team was also to be commended for taking all possible measures against the COVID-19 in the harsh environment and completing a difficult mission without infecting anyone. Finally, I would like to keep in mind the families and friends of the team members for their deep understanding and warm support.”
The Self-Defense Fleet has been pursuing efforts to deepen friendly relations and mutual understanding with the Pacific Island nations by conducting goodwill visits and routine exercises, with the aim of realizing a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.” The Self-Defense Fleet hopes for Kingdom of Tonga's swift recovery and sustainable development.
