JS MAKINAMI participated in the multi-lateral training “Talisman Sabre 21” with the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Navy, the Republic of Korea Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy

From July 18-27, JS MAKINAMI participated in the multi-lateral training “Talisman Sabre 21” in the waters southeast of Cairns, to enhance tactical skills and cooperation between participating navies.
The Commanding Officer of Escort Division 1, CAPT HIRAI Katsuhide, stated, “I am very delighted to participate in Talisman Sabre 21 with the Australian Defense Force (ADF), U.S. military and the other participating countries. This exercise was such a high-end amphibious operation exercise that our force could make a great progress in various fields and improve bilateral and multi-lateral interoperability.”
The Commanding Officer of Expeditionary Strike Group 7, RADM Chris Engdahl, stated, “Emerging events in the Indo-Pacific region underscore the importance of presence to ensure a rules-based international maritime order, Talisman Sabre 21 allows the U.S. alongside partners and allies, to further enhance our ability to respond to any contingency as part of a joint or combined effort in support of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific region.”
The Commanding Officer of HMAS Brisbane, CDR Aaron Cox, stated, “The maritime domain is becoming an increasingly important strategic environment for Australia and its allies, and conducting navy-to-navy training is of significant mutual benefit. We are proud to be working with our friends in the region, to develop our core skills, learn from each other, share knowledge and strengthen our long-standing relationships.”
Despite COVID-19, The Self-Defense Fleet remains responsive and integrates with allied and partner countries, safeguards the peace and security of Japan, and contributes to support stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
In addition, The U.S. side joins with USS America, USS New Orleans, USS Germantown, USS Rafael Peralta, USS Alan Shepard and USS Rappahannock. The Australian side joins with HMAS Canberra, HMAS Choules, HMAS Brisbane, HMAS Parramatta, HMAS Ballarat and submarine, also U.S. and Australian P-8 maritime patrol aircrafts. Korean is participating with ROKS Wang Geon, and the Canadian have sent HMCS Calgary.
