JS MAKINAMI participated in the multi-lateral training “Pacific Vanguard 21” with the U.S.Navy, the Royal Australian Navy and the Republic of Korea Navy

From July 5-10, JS MAKINAMI participated in the multi-lateral training “Pacific Vanguard 21” off Sydney with USS Rafael Peralta, HMAS Brisbane, ROKS Wang Geon, U.S. and Australian P-8 maritime patrol aircrafts and Australian submarine, to enhance tactical skills and cooperation between participating navies.
The Commanding Officer of Escort Division 1, CAPT HIRAI Katsuhide, who served as the Japanese Commander for this event, stated, “Pacific Vanguard 21 is high-end training to operate together in high threat, complex situations in order to maintain stability and freedom of access to the oceans, and global commons. With the threat of COVID-19 still unresolved, we are pleased to be able to hold this event with the great support of our host country, Australia. I hope this exercise will further strengthen the strong partnership among the participating countries and contribute to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region in order to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”
Despite COVID-19, The Self-Defense Fleet remains responsive and integrates with allied and partner countries, safeguards the peace and security of Japan, and contributes to support stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
