Opening Ceremony Australia, India, Japan, and U.S. Fleet Commanders Hold Flag Meeting of MALABAR 2026.

VADM OMACHI Katsushi, Commander, Self Defense Fleet, held an opening ceremony and a flag meeting with RADM Anita WILLIAMS, Commander, Australian Fleet, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN); VADM AN. Pramod, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, the Indian Navy (IN); and VADM Patrick J. HANNIFIN, Commander, U.S. SEVENTH Fleet, during the Japan-Australia-India-U.S. Multilateral Exercise (MALABAR 2026) hosted by the JMSDF this fiscal year. In addition, bilateral meetings were held with each nation.

The MALABAR exercise began in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between the USN and the IN; since then, the JMSDF joined in 2007, followed by the RAN in 2020. At the opening ceremony, VADM OMACHI emphasized enhancing tactical proficiency and strengthening the trust among participating navies. During the flag meeting, commanders from the four nations shared their views on maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region and exchanged opinions on the future direction for the development of the MALABAR exercise.

The Self Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
