The Self Defense Fleet participated in PSI (Proliferation Security Initiative) maritime interdiction exercise “Pacific Shield 25” hosted by Japan.
JMSDF JS Mogami and P-1 patrol aircraft participated in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) maritime interdiction exercise “Pacific Shield 25” hosted by Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the vicinity of the Bōsō Peninsula.
The PSI is an international initiative aimed at preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, missiles, and related materials—which pose a threat to international peace and stability—within the framework of international law and the domestic laws of participating countries. The program included academic session, table top exercise, and live exercise, and was joined by other Japanese agencies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is the host agency, and the Ministry of Finance, the National Police Agency and the Japan Coast Guard. Through demonstrating a series of actions related to preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in cooperation with the participating agencies, we enhanced related capabilities and coordination with the relevant Japanese agencies as well as deepened mutual understanding with the relevant agencies of the participating countries.
The Self Defense Fleet contributes to preventing proliferation of weapons of mass destruction through PSI in cooperation with allied and like-minded countries, while maintains readiness and contributes to the peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
