Joint Operation and Defense Cooperation

In March 2006, Ministry of Defense and Self Defense Forces shifted to the jointly operational structure and Chief of Staff, Joint Staff office became to advise the Minister of Defense primarily from view point as military specialist.
Also, tight U.S. - Japan cooperation based on the security treaty has been playing a important role to secure the security of Japan. In order to strengthen U.S.-Japan security posture, Self Defense Fleet keep close opinion exchanges with U.S. Seventh Fleet and conduct bilateral exercises in an active manner, and extremely high interoperability is maintained.

Furtherance of jointly operational posture

Under joint operations, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff office integrated concept of operations including those of 3 forces. And, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff office became to advise Minister of Defense primarily from view point as military specialist. Commander-In-Chief, Self Defense Fleet is commanded by Minister of Defense throughout Chief of Staff, Joint Staff office on commanding authority on subordinate units and JGSDF or JASDF units provided to Self Defense Fleet.
Also, for the better recognition of joint operations, Self Defense Fleet actively cope with the joint exercises with other 2 forces of JGSDF and JASDF. Among them, the amount of joint exercise with JGSDF using JMSDF transport ship and international activities is increasing.

Furtherance of cooperation with the U.S. Navy

Self Defense Fleet actively conduct bilateral exercise with US Seventh Fleet and boost flag level exchange.
It is indispensable to deepen mutual understanding in tactics and intention sharing and to maintain interoperability in order to execute the smooth bilateral operation.
Also, in view of conducting mission granted to Self Defense Force under Law concerning situation in areas surrounding Japan, it is important to exercise procedures of cooperation and coordination often.
These efforts attribute to the enforcement of efficacy for Security Treaty with United States and to the maintenance and improvement of deterrence.
