 Dr. Toshi Yoshihara visited the JMSDF Staff College

Dr. Toshi Yoshihara, a professor at the U.S. Naval War College, visited the JMSDF Staff College on September 27, 2011.

Dr. Yoshihara is an expert in Asia Pacific security.

He is well-known as a co-author of “Red Star over the Pacific: China’s Rise and the Challenge to U.S. Maritime Strategy” (Annapolis, MD: Naval Institute Press, 2010) which assesses how the rise of Chinese sea power will affect U.S. maritime strategy.

Moreover, his current article “Resident Power: The Case for An Enhanced US Military Presence in Australia1 attracted many Japanese people’s attention because it insisted that the United States should reconsider the distribution of U.S. Forces in Asia Pacific region, and recommended the U.S. Forces be increased in Australia. Dr. Yoshihara came to Japan on purpose to deliver the lecture titled “The Future of Anti-Ship Missiles Some Chinese Perspectives” at the National Institute for Defense Studies, Japan. After the lecture, he visited the JMSDF Staff College, and we had a precious opportunity to talk with him.

Dr. Yoshihara made a courtesy call to VADM Yoshida, President, JMSDF Staff College. After the courtesy call, he participated in the study meeting with researchers and instructors of the JMSDF Staff College. Thanks to his friendly atmosphere and fluent Japanese, we had a frank discussion, and the meeting was a great success.

He was promoted to a professor on July 17, 2011. Taking this opportunity, we sincerely express our congratulations on his promotion.

Dr. Toshi Yoshihara is a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and the John A. van Beuren Chair of Asia-Pacific Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He is an expert in Asia-Pacific security, and author or co-author of many books including “Red Star over the Pacific: China’s Rise and the Challenge to U.S. Maritime Strategy.” He draws attention as an up-and-coming researcher in the United States of America.
