History

History of Maritime Officer Candidate School

Jun 1953 Education and training for officer candidates started at the Headquarters of the Coastal Safety Force (former body of JMSDF) in Yokosuka.
Sep 1953 Officer candidate course was transferred to the Maritime Service School in Yokosuka.
Jul 1954 Establishment of the Self-Defense Force. The name of the school was changed from the Coastal Safety Force Service School to the Self Defense Force Maritime Service School.
Jan 1956 The Self Defense Force Maritime Service School separated into the main school and a branch school. The main school moved from Yokosuka to Etajima.
Mar 1956 Education and training for officer candidates was transferred to the Maritime Service School in Etajima.
May 1957 Maritime Officer Candidate School (MOCS) was established.
Aug 1957 Limited duty officer candidate (selected enlisted warrant officers and chief petty officers) course started.
Apr 1958 MOCS started classes in the Imperial Navy school dormitory, Red Bricks (Aka-Renga).
Aug 1960 Aviation Officer candidate (enlisted personnel from the aviation field) course and Officer recruit (candidates who have civilian experience in the medical field or engineering) course started.
Sep 1966 General line officer candidate (prior enlisted personnel) course was started.
Jul 1971 The Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force-United States Navy Midshipman Exchange Program was started.
May 1972 The officer candidate emblem was revised.
Oct 1972 The 1st United States Navy Personnel Exchange Program Officer was assigned.
Apr 1980 Medical and Dental officer candidate course started.
May 1980 MOCS government office building (Aka-Renga) starts renovation.
Jan 1993 Renovation was completed.
Sep 1997 New dormitory was constructed.
Apr 2002 Interior parts of Aka-Renga was renovated.
Aug 2004 Interior renovation was completed.
Feb 2019 Educational building was demolished.
Oct 2020 Construction of new education building started.
Aug 2023 New education building will be finished.
