「赤レンガ」は１８９３年に竣工した建造物であり、設計はイギリス人ジョン・ダイアック（注１）によるものである。

１階は自習室、２階は寝室及び講堂として使用されていました。現在は庁舎、教務のための講堂及び候補生の自習室として使用されています。

戦前に３回の改修が行われており、戦後は１９９２〜１９９３年及び２００２〜２００４年に大規模な改修が行われました。

This building designed by John DIACK, a British designer, was build in 1893. The 1st floor was used as self study rooms and the 2nd floor was used as dormitories and classrooms. Now we use this building as staff offices and students’ classrooms.

This building was renovated 3 times before WW2. After the war, it has been renovated twice, once in 1992~1993 and again in 2002~2004.

この建物に使われているレンガは、それぞれ丁寧に梱包され、イギリスから運ばれてきたといわれています。しかし、１９８４年の調査（注２）では、一部は広島県産であることが判明しました。

説はいろいろあるものの、レンガそのものは極めて仕上げが優れたものであり、大変貴重なものです。

It is said that the bricks used in this building were carefully packed in England and carried to Etajima. But　it was proved that some bricks were made in Hiroshima, Japan in 1984.

Although there are some opinions, these bricks are excellent and precious.

玄関の床板には、１９０９年に除籍された軍艦「金剛」の甲板のチーク材が使用されています。板の連続した３個の穴は、「金剛」の甲板にビス打ちされていた穴のなごりです。なお、現在海上自衛隊で保有するイージス艦の「こんごう」は３代目となります。　（注３）

TThe floor of this entrance hall was taken from the teak planks of the warship “KONGO” when that ship was retired. “KONGO” was a Japanese Imperial Navy ship built in 1875. The three holes on each plank show that they were actually used on the warship. These holes are where dowels held the deck together.

Today, the JMSDF also has an Aegis destroyer named “KONGO” . She is the third warship to be named “KONGO”.

この桜の木は、２０１０年６月１１日、日米安全保障条約改定５０周年を記念して植樹されたものです。

１９７１年以来、日米候補生の相互理解及び米海軍と海上自衛隊の親善を目的として、毎年士官候補生の交換行事を米海軍との間で実施しており、２０１０年は日米安全保障条約改定５０周年という節目であることを記念して、植樹を実施しました。

This cherry tree was planted on June 11th 2010 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Japan-US alliance.

The JMSDF-USN Midshipman Exchange program has been conducted every year since 1971 for mutual understanding between midshipmen and for friendship between the USN and the JMSDF.
