7www.mod.go.jp/en/jdf/The JMOD/JSDF will strengthen its stand-off defense capabilities to disrupt and defeat the forces invading Japan early and from far away. In order to swiftly build this capability, the JMOD/JSDF is, first of all, working towards the prompt procurement of indigenous stand-off missiles.As announced in October of last year, the Government of Japan has decided to procure Tomahawk, which is complementary to the indigenous stand-off missiles, one year ahead of the original schedule. The JMOD have concluded a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) for the acquisition of Tomahawk missiles and related equipment with the U.S. Government under a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement, which was signed at the JMOD on January 18 in the presence of DM Kihara and U.S. Ambassador to Japan Emanu-el. It is scheduled to be acquired between JFY 2025 and JFY 2027.In addition, the JMOD has been contracting for the JSM (Joint Strike Missile, manufac-turedby Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace of Norway) since JFY 2018 and included the cost of procuring the missile (JPY35.2 B) in the JFY 2024 draft budget as well. The contract for JFY 2023 was concluded on October 18, 2023. Its amount is approximately JPY34 B and the acquisition of missiles under this contract is scheduled for JFY 2026.The JMOD/JSDF will continue to promote the procurement of various stand-off missiles and work for early building of stand-off defense capabilities based on the Defense Buildup Program.Defense Attachés at Embassies and Defense Attachés at Embassies and Missions Worldwide Missions Worldwide On January 18, DM Kihara encouraged 17 defense attachés who will be newly dispatched to their assigned countries this spring to fulfill their duties for all efforts in the country of assignment, including information collection, defense equipment and technology cooperation. In FY2022, the JMOD dispatched one to Lithua-nia in order to strengthen intelligence collection in Europe and another to Canada considering the significant progress in exchanges in the field of space, joint training, and other matters. In FY2023, the JMOD newly dispatched one to Qatar as well.
