5www.mod.go.jp/en/jdf/On February 19, Defense Minister Kihara held a meeting with H.E. Dr. Al-Khasawneh, Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Jordan. He conveyed his appreciation toward the sup-port from Jordan for JSDF’s transportation of Japanese nationals from Israel and expressed his respect for Jordan which plays a signifi-cant role for peace and stability in the Middle East region. Both Ministers confirmed that they will further promote defense cooperation and exchanges between Japan and Jordan, which are strategic partners, considering that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. On February 13, JS Sazanami conducted bilateral exercise with KD Jebat of the Royal Malaysian Navy in the Andaman Sea to improve their tactical capabil-ities and mutual understanding for maintaining and strengthening a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. For the JSDF, this exercise contributed to the realization of stable utilization of the ocean.On January 30, the JMOD held the 13th Japan-ASEAN Defense Vice-Min-isterial Forum in Tokyo, chaired by Vice-Minister Serizawa. The partici-pants discussed “Japan-ASEAN Ministerial Initiative for Enhanced Defense Cooperation: JASMINE”, which was proposed by DM Kihara at the 8th ASEAN-Japan Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting in November 2023. ASEAN Member States expressed their support for the “JASMINE” and presented inputs for advancing this initiative further.
