7www.mod.go.jp/en/jdf/National Defense Medical College (NDMC) is an institution of the JMOD/JSDF to train the SDF personnel who are physicians (medical officers), public health and registered nurses (nursing officers), and technical officers. The NDMC makes them acquire the advanced knowledge and research ability on the theory and application in medicine and nursing required for performing SDF’s duty, and conducts clinical study and other studies on treatment. At the NDMC and adjoining NDMC Hospital, an “advanced treatment hospital” with the approval of MHLW, about 1,080 students and 1,300 staffs including doctors and nurses are working. The NDMC marks 50th anniversary in November 2023.The “National Defense Strategy” formulated in December 2022 mentions that “the MOD/SDF has been placing importance on sustaining health of SDF personnel and will transform SDF medical force into an organization that saves the lives of SDF personnel who carry out their missions in a contingency in spite of danger” and the “Defense Buildup Program” describes that the NDMC “will strengthen education and research including combat trauma care capabilities improvement and advanced medical education for medical and nursing officers and skill improvement for the medical personnel of SDF”. Thus, expecta-tions for the NDMC have increased recently.The NDMC has engaged in the various international exchanges in education and training, and research. One of the efforts for such exchanges is the International Forum on Blast The JMSDF participated in Exercise SAMASAMA in Philippines with the U.S., the Philip-pines, Canada, and the UK. This exercise highlighted our shared commitment to ensure the freedom of the seas based on the rule of law, as well as to maintain a rules-based international order. “SAMASAMA" means “together” in Tagalog. The JMOD/JMSDF will strengthen close cooperation with countries which share basic values such as the rule of law.Injury Countermeasures (IFBIC). This forum is jointly held by the NDMC, U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), and U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM). Japan and the U.S. alternate with each other each year in hosting the IFBIC. The seventh IFBIC was held in Japan in May 2023 with more than a hundred participants and 42 paper presentations from the U.S, UK, Germa-ny, Canada, Australia, and Japan. In the forum this year, medical and technical countermea-sures on blast injury to head which is occurred for hundreds of thousands of military person-nel of the U.S. Armed Forces and blast injury to inner ear caused by the training with firearms and artillery were discussed.
