6+@M/NAmid an increasingly severe security environment, including North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches, the JSDF and the U.S. Armed Forces conducted a bilateral exercise on November 5. This bilateral exercise reaffirms the coordination between Japan and the U.S. in responding to any situation, and further strengthens bilateral operational capability. The JSDF and the U.S. Armed Forces routinely work together and maintain high levels of operational readiness to respond to any situation to defend our nations, contributing to regional peace and stability.On November 16 and 19, the JMSDF conducted the SM-3 flight tests of JS MAYA and JS HAGURO in the vicinity of Hawaii with support from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency in order to confirm their functions for ballistic missile defense (BMD). SM-3 Block IIA is an advanced interceptor missile for BMD that was jointly developed by the U.S. and Japan. It was the first time that a JMSDF ship fired this missile.
