5www.mod.go.jp/en/jdf/From August 9 to September 17, JASDF participated in Exer-cise Pitch Black 22, hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), to contribute to upholding and reinforcing a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. More than 100 aircraft from 17 nations took part in the exercise and JASDF deployed F-2A fighter aircraft to Australia for the first time. JASDF improved tactical skills, enhanced interoperability with the RAAF and U.S. Forces, and deepened mutual understanding with the partici-pating countries by taking part in the exercise and training in practical environment.Chief of Staff, JASDF visits AustraliaGeneral Izutsu, Chief of Staff, JASDF visited Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia and observed Pitch Black 22. He met with Chief of Royal Air Force Australia, Com-mander of Pacific Air Forces of the U.S., and other senior military officials and exchanged views for further cooper-ation. General Izutsu also visited German Air Force unit and met with Chief of Luftwaffe. He conveyed his welcome for the visit of German Eurofighter to Japan after the exercise.Pitch Black 22Pitch Black 22
