40BS/NDefense Minister Hamada, who was newly appointed to the position on August 12, held a first telephone conference with U.S. Defense Secretary Austin on August 16. In the conference, Minister Hamada resolved to fundamentally reinforce the defense capabili-ties of Japan through formulation of National Security Strategy and other documents. The Ministers strongly condemned China’s ballistic missile launch early August, and confirmed that both sides would cooperate closely and seamlessly including at the Minis-terial level in order to respond to any situation within the region. In addition, they agreed that both countries would closely cooperate for the steady progress of the realignment initiatives of the U.S. Forces in Japan, and also confirmed that they would continue to work together to further strengthen Japan-U.S. defense coopera-tion and to maintain and strengthen the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.”From August 10 to 12, General Yoshida, Chief of Staff of the JGSDF, participated in Chief of Army Symposium and Japan-U.S.-Australia Trilateral Senior Leaders Seminar in Australia and exchanged opinions on the security environments of Indo-Pacific region with leaders from other participating countries. They agreed to strongly oppose both unilateral changes to the status quo by force and any attempt to destabilize the region and to promote multilateral cooperation and accelerate efforts to maintain and strengthen a Free and Open Indo-Pacific on the basis of the trust build between them.From July 26, General Yamazaki, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, attended the SPDMM CHOD Conference hosted by Australian Defence Force as an observer for the first time. CHODs and senior leaders from Australia, Chile, Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Kingdom of Tonga participated in this conference. On July 26 and 27, he also participated in the Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defense Conference co-hosted by Australian Defence Force and the U.S. INDOPACOM. On Aug 19, Defense Minister Hamada held a telecon with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence of Austra-lia Richard Marles.
