They concurred that it is important to strengthen Japan-NATO cooperation under the severe security environment.On the same day, General Yamazaki, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff met with Admiral Bauer. They shared the situational awareness mainly regarding Russia’s invasion to Ukraine and surrounding Japan, and confirmed that unilateral attempts to change status quo are unacceptable and common challenges for international community. They also discussed future Japan-NATO defense cooperation and agreed that they would strengthen their cooperation not only in Europe but also in the Indo-Pacific region for the realization of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.+%'Participation in the NATO Chiefs of Defence SessionOn May 19, General Yamazaki, Chief of Staff was invited by Admiral Bauer, the Chairman of NATO Military Committee, and attended the Chiefs of Defence Session. It is the first time in history for the Chief of Staff, Japan Joint Staff to participate in the event. He joined the Asia-Pa-cific Session as a representative of Indo-Pacific, where the concern of the security is increasing, with General Cambell, Chief of the Defence Force of Australia, and representatives of New Zealand and Republic of Korea and discussed with representatives of NATO members on the security environment of Indo-Pacific.Japan-NATO Bilateral ExerciseOn June 6, the Oversea Training Cruise unit conducted a bilateral exercise with the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 unit, the Italian Navy ITNS Carlo Margottini and the Turkish Navy TNS Sarihreis in the Mediterranean Sea in order to strengthen cooperation with NATO.
