5From June 12 to 14, JMSDF landing ship JS Shimokita conducted a bilateral training with amphibious assault ship USS America, amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans and dock landing ship USS Germantown in the eastern waters of Okinawa.From June 14 to 24, Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) joined field training “Southern Jackaroo 21” with U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and Australian Army in Mount Bundy Training Area, Australia. The training was Japan, U.S., Australia trilateral training held in Australia since 2013 and was the eighth time. About 60 personnel from From June 24, JGSDF conducted exercise Orient Shield 21 with U.S. Forces, Japan and the U.S. Army at Camp Itami and in other locations. Around 3,000 personnel from Japa-nese and U.S. personnel participated in this year’s Orient Shield, the largest ever in the 39 year since the exercise began in 1982. The vessels simulated procedures such as embarking their LCACs to each other to improve interoperability in amphib-ious operations. MOD/JSDF will continue to conduct bilat-eral and multilateral exercises with U.S. Forces and demon-strate that the two countries are working together.JGSDF, 280 from USMC and 410 from Australian Army joined and simulated combat shooting training in the forest, making use of vast training area in Australia. Japan Ministry of Defense (JMOD) and Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) demonstrated the cooperation and unity among the three nations through the training. At the Japan-U.S. Defense Ministerial Meeting in March of this year, Japan and the U.S. concurred to conduct high-end training to strengthen their readiness. Based on this meeting, new drills were introduced in this year’s Orient Shield.
