2. Questions and Answers

Question:
There are growing objections from the opposition parties concerning your remarks made this morning on the visit to Takeshima by ROK President Kim Myung-bak. Can you tell us of your true intention on this?

Minister:
It is said that the ROK President made a visit to Takeshima today. The main point here is that this is absolutely incompatible with the basic position of our country on Takeshima, and it is totally unacceptable. On the other hand, with regard to why the ROK President decided to make this visit at this time, I gave my own assumptions in that it was probably done for reasons of domestic politics, so I never said that the Takeshima issue was a domestic issue for ROK. In any case, there is no change to the fact that the Takeshima issue is a consequential territorial issue for Japan along with the Northern Territories, and that this should be solved through diplomatic negotiations.

Question:
The opposition parties are showing signs of issuing a censure motion against you. What are your thoughts on the fact that the message of your comment is not being understood?

Minister:
I think there is going to be a need to give a correct explanation. I am willing to go out and explain this if requested.
