Pacific Partnership 2018

From April 25th to May 9th, the USNS Mercy Hospital Ship visited Sri Lanka as a part of Pacific Partnership 2018 and JSDF personnel joined various programmes.

Pacific Partnership, an initiative launched by the United States Pacific Command in 2006, is an annual deployment of the U.S. Navy ships in the Asia-Pacific region to provide medical assistance, conduct civil engineering services, and engage in cultural exchanges. Pacific Partnership contributes to strengthening collaboration with the participating countries and facilitating international disaster relief activities through cooperation with the government, military, international organizations, and NGOs.

Japan began participating in Pacific Partnership in 2007 with the dispatch of two medical officers and has been actively involved in this initiative since that time.

In Pacific Partnership 2018, JSDF personnel joined dental and medical activities in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka and conducted capacity building assistance through opinion exchanges with the armed forces of Sri Lanka and private medical professionals.

The Japanese team also shared valuable time with local children by teaching them how to make origami and paper balloons while at the same time conducting medical care.
