The 2nd Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS SHIMOKITA conducted a bilateral exercise “OGURI-VERNY 23-4” and made a port call at Nouméa, New Caledonia.

On August 10, the 2nd Surface Unit of the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (IPD23), JS SHIMOKITA conducted a Japan-French bilateral exercise “OGURI-VERNY 23-4” with the French Armed Forces in French New Caledonia (FANC), FS AUGUSTE BENEBIG, improved its tactical capabilities and strengthened cooperation with the FANC.
From August 11-14, the Unit made a port call at Nouméa, New Caledonia and conducted various exchange programs, deepened mutual understanding and friend ship with New Caledonia and the FANC. Also, the commanders and sailors of the unit offered flowers and prayers for the requiem of the 17th submarine, which sank off the coast of Noumea in 1943.
The Self-Defense Fleet maintains readiness and contributes to peace and stability of the Indo-Pacific region, not only for the defense of Japan but also for the realization of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” in cooperation with allied and like-minded navies.
